Choosing which ecommerce platform to go for isn’t easy and that is why I created this list of what I think are the best ecommerce platforms for UK Businesses, specifically for small businesses and start ups.

Now this isn’t just a random list of choices, all of the options in this list are viable options, that I have personally tested and reviewed.

ShopWired, one of the newer UK based ecommerce platforms having being established in 2013. However, they have been very successful in that short period of time and now power over 8500 ecommerce stores. They also boast the likes of Wowcher and EDF Energy amongst their customers.

Best For?

ShopWired is a really good choice for any B2B company as they offer a range of features that are really useful such as trade accounts, bulk features and quotations.

It is also a very competent platform for B2C business and has been designed to be easy to use, the set up process is also very quick. So it doesn’t matter whether you are new to ecommerce or an experienced online seller, you will be able to get a store up and running in no time.

Bigcommerce are one of the biggest (no pun intended) names in the world of ecommerce and in the early 2010’s were going head to head with Shopify as the biggest hosted ecommerce platform in the world! While they didn’t win, they are still a very popular platform that boasts a user base in the hundreds of thousands.

Best For?

Bigcommerce is very much geared for big business and the platform is very capable but small businesses can also take advantage of the platform with Bigcommerce Essentials, which offer a range of plans that are suitable for starts up all the way to ecommerce businesses with multiple six figure turnovers.

While primarily aimed a B2C ecommerce businesses, Bigcommerce does offer a range of tools that can be used for B2B business and even though they primarily use their own platform and website builder, it can be integrated with the world’s most popular website builder WordPress by way of a plugin.

Shopblocks is a relatively newcomer to the world of ecommerce, having only launched in 2016 but foundations of the platform were actually laid back in 2011. The platform has grown to a user base in excess of 1,000 and their onboarding process offers a completely tailored solution for all businesses.

Best For?

Shopblocks is primarily targeted towards established B2C ecommerce businesses who are looking to move on from their existing platform and have a completely custom built website and with as smooth a transition as possible.

Their Blocklabs builder is also suited to anyone who has experience of designing websites and have been frustrated with some of the limited builders available on other platforms.

One of the main plus points of the Shopblocks platform is that none of their plans include turnover limits or transaction fees.

So there they are, what I think are best ecommerce platforms for UK businesses and the options on this cover ecommerce websites of all sizes, from small boutique to national/multi national ecommerce retailers.

I personally have used more than one platform on this list to build an ecommerce platform and the ones that I haven’t used are ones that I have tested and reviewed and would happily recommend them to others or use them myself for a future ecommerce project.
